Survey exhibition of video works by Terry Adkins bringing together standalone works, performance-based media and documentation from the artist’s multimedia recital installations. The exhibition explored Adkins’s interdisciplinary approach to sound, performance, sculpture and moving image through works referencing historical figures including John Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Martin Luther King Jr., Bessie Smith and Matthew Henson.
Terry Adkins was an American interdisciplinary artist, musician and educator whose practice combined performance, sculpture, sound, photography and video through deeply researched explorations of cultural memory and historical narratives. Often working through improvisation, archival material and musical structure, Adkins developed immersive installations and performances that examined revolutionary figures, collective histories and the transformative potential of art.
